For long solar heat has been converted into usable energy, solar cells that compose the solar panels is what gathers the heat to generate the electricity. These solar cells however are only capable of gathering only 32% of the heat, this is on the most common silicon cell. With this new cell more energy is gathered is greater than this Shockley-Queisser Limit, which would be the 32%.
The Japanese Space Agency (JAXA) has been working to harvest solar energy from the sun in space wirelessly to be received/used on Earth. They would be using solar panels in space to get the energy from the sun, but the main goal was to be able to transport and harvest that energy without using any cables. This has not been completely accomplished but is expected to work in the near future.
